Zamora:
Ecuador Travel Guide Overview | Excursions | Accommodation | Restaurants | Nambija & Zumbi | Write a review about Zamora
Zamora is the capital of Province Zamora-Chinchipe and with just 16,000 in the whole area is one of the least populated areas in Ecuador as well as backing on to the main Podocarpus National Park through the Bombuscara entry point.

From one block over from the central plaza you can view some fine botany at Orquideario Tzanka home to over 1000 different plant types. Tel. 07-605692. Also, Orquideario Paphinia, some 2 km away from town is actually developing a great collection of over 3000 native plants including orchids and aroids, as well as living samples of useful timber trees, medicinal plants, edible native plants and many other ornamental plants and shrubs.

Zamora was originally a colonial town founded by the Spanish but was attacked by the Indians and reclaimed by the indigenous Indian groups that include the Shuar and Saraguro Indians whom you'll see from time to time milling around the neighborhood in their distinguishable black shorts.
 Ecuador and Galapagos Travel Excursions
The entrance to the Podocarpus National Park is via the Bombuscara River and makes for a most memorable hike with its plethora subtropical birds including the rare Coppery-chested Jacamar, White-breasted Parakeet along with various others too numerous to mention, find the road east out of Zamora and turn right when you reach the Río Bombuscara. Do not cross the river; take the road that follows the river upstream. The road ends in a car park, where the trail begins. Thirty minutes' walk takes you to the visitors' center and more trails, including a river trail and a 30 minute loop trail. It is highly recommended for nature lovers, especially those who might have difficulty walking on steep trails. The trail to the visitors center is virtually flat, unlike almost all other trails at this elevation in Ecuador. More information is available from the Ministerio del Ambiente office at the entrance to town from Loja.
